On the Edge of Illness

As a mother, the bottom fell out of my heart last week while I was sitting in the doctor’s office with my youngest son, Matthew.
“We have to do a CAT scan and a chest X-ray and probably an MRI,” the doctor told me calmly.

I tried to be just as calm, but inside, I could feel myself begin to shake. “What are you looking for?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

Even my voice seemed unreal. We’d come in because the medicine my son had gotten for Lyme disease the week before didn’t seem to be helping. In fact, his symptoms had grown and had gotten worse. But now, all these tests. These were beyond Lyme disease. (more…)

West Nile and Lyme Disease: New Alerts

Public health officials are growing worried that two diseases, the dangerous West Nile disease and the sometimes-disabling Lyme disease, may spread this summer beyond the areas where they had originally been problems.
