For smokers, there are also other properties in the smoke of tobacco, apart from nicotine, that may be addicting. Recent research has revealed that tobacco smoke (without nicotine) affects or reduces the levels of MAO A and B in the brain by about 40 percent. MAO A and B are chemicals in our brains that break down dopamine, our internal brain chemistry for pleasure. (more…)

Cold Turkey or Not. Part 2
Thursday, January 19th, 2012Cold Turkey or Not. Part 1
Thursday, January 19th, 2012Tobacco smokers borrowed the term “cold turkey” from heroin addicts to describe a method of quitting smoking without medication. Heroin addicts get “gooseflesh” or goose bumps when they withdraw from heroin without medication, and they have the appearance of a cold turkey, hence the slang term.

University of Texas Graduate School of Business Post 2
Monday, June 6th, 2011Losefsky, like many other UT students, exploited opportunities the school offers in Austin to get his feet wet in the startup arena. Students can get class credit for independent studies and internships with local companies. He pursued an independent study with a local venture capital firm. Prospects look great for UT graduates, particularly those who want to stay in the bustling Austin area, whose high-tech sector is growing at an annual 7 percent clip. It’s home to more than 900 technology companies, including industry giant Dell Computer, whose founder, Michael Dell, dropped out of UT as an undergrad to start his legendary venture. (more…)
University of Texas Graduate School of Business Post 1
Monday, May 30th, 2011At the University of Texas at Austin’s Graduate School of Business, students learn the intricacies of Internet commerce by launching companies in a petri dish of sorts. In a collaborative project called the Experimental Digital Economy, business students at four schools interact in a quasidigital market where supply and demand determine prices. Dubbed the “digital mall,” it’s an intranet supported by the school’s Center for Research in Electronic Commerce, which the school established in 1994 with hardware, software, and financial support from IBM, Dell Computer, and other companies. How Long Is a Second Part 4
Friday, May 6th, 2011My son jumps up. “Mom, I hear her.” I trust his ears — even as a baby he could hear sirens seconds before either my husband or me. How long is a second? I rush out the door, past the driveway, and see three angels with my daughter in tow. She is biting her lip; relief and terror mingle in her eyes. (more…)
How Long Is a Second Part 3
Wednesday, April 27th, 2011I wait for the police, my husband, a miracle. My son is sobbing. “I’m sorry, Mommy, I didn’t mean to lose her.” “Oh, baby, you didn’t lose her. I did.” “I am never going to see her again!” he wails. He inherited his melodrama from my side of the family. Funny, this morning I absconded his plastic hockey stick just before it made contact with her head, this afternoon he has lost his best friend. “I’m scared.” he whimpers. “So am I, honey, so am I”. been haunting the school yards. Just last
month she actually tried to abduct a little girl at the elementary school eight blocks from our house. Flyers have been sent home to parents, advising caution. I even had the “stranger” talk with my eldest but felt 4 years old was just too young to learn that the world is not perfect and all is not always well. (more…)
How Long Is a Second Part 1
Tuesday, April 12th, 2011“I’ll race you,” my oldest says to his little sister and pedals away. Never to be outdone by her older brother, my just-turned-4-year-old races after him, convinced she will be the champion. Chuckling at the myriad of shapes and forms in which sibling rivalry manifests itself, I reach down to settle the baby, who is fussing at the thought of being left behind. “Don’t worry, you’ll get your chance,” I say and begin a one-sided dialogue about the trees, birds and passing cyclists. Finding a Stockbroker Post 2
Friday, March 18th, 2011Look for the following:
Compatibility
Choose a broker whose overall investment philosophy matches your objectives of income or growth. If you’re conservative, stay away from a swinger who constantly comes up with new issues, wants you to trade frequently, suggests speculative situations, and scoffs at interest and dividends. If you’re aggressive, look for someone who keeps up on growth opportunities and is smart enough to recognize that no one should always be fully invested in equities and not to recommend bonds or liquid assets under unfavorable stock market conditions.
